Reflective Social Media Planning

Reflective social media planning simply means looking back at what you have done to help you to move forwards with your social media marketing. The end of one year and the beginning of a new one is naturally a time for reflection and planning, many of us make New Year’s resolutions in our personal lives and vow to do things differently based on our experiences so the idea of doing this in your business is just an extension of that. After all, your business is an extension of you.

Now is the perfect time to take a look back at what has gone well for you on social media, this will tell you what your audience wants to see, what they find helpful and what they interact with. When you are planning your social media, you can take this information and do more of it.

Just as importantly, when you are looking back at what went well, make sure you keep a note of what didn’t go well, this tells you what your audience does not want to see meaning that you can avoid making the same mistakes.

How to check your social media performance

When you begin your reflective social media planning you need to make sure you are looking in the right places for the information you need. This is where the analytics section of your social media account comes in.

You can gain a huge amount of valuable information from your analytics such as what your top-performing posts are, the reach you are getting from your posts, how people are finding you and what sort of interaction your posts are receiving. It’s a good idea to check and record this information at least monthly to make your reflective social media planning easier.

On Facebook, you go to the page for your business then go to page insights. This will allow you to see β€˜yesterday’, the last 7 days or the last 28 days of data. The data provided gives you an overall figure for post reach, post engagements and page likes as well as showing you the increase or decrease in figures over the selected time period. You will also be able to see all your posts ranked in order of most engaging.

If you want to view the insights for older posts, you will need to scroll down your page and click on each individually. Underneath each image is an orange bar with the words XX people reached. If you click on this you will be shown the reach, reactions/comments/shares and clicks for that specific post.

On Instagram, you go to your profile then select insights from the menu. Here you will be able to select the last 7 days, last 14 days, last 30 days, previous month or last 90 days. You will be able to see how many accounts you have reached; how many accounts have engaged and what your total followers are. Again, you will also be able to see how these figures have changed during the time period you have selected to view. As you scroll further down you will be able to see the content you have shared and then gain a breakdown of the insights for each specific post.

If you want to look at the insights for older posts, you can still do this by finding the post on your grid and then tapping insights just underneath the image. This will tell you how many accounts that post reached, how many interactions it received and how much profile activity resulted from it. As you scroll down you can even see how many people found the post through hashtags, from your profile or from their home feed.

There are more insights available and a few ways to find them, so rather than make this a super long blog, if you need any help with this please feel free to email questions or send me a message via the Magic Bean Media socials 🧑

The importance of goal setting

At the beginning of the year, did you set yourself any social media goals to aim for? If you did, did you meet them?

If you didn’t, are you planning on setting yourself some goals for the coming year?

The next stage of reflective social media planning is to review your past goals before setting new ones.

Before you begin to set any new goals for your 2022 social media, there are a few things you can do to make things easier for yourself. Take some time to reflect on:

🌱 What were your 2021 goals?
🌱 Have you achieved them?
🌱 If not, are these still your aims or have they changed?
🌱 Which things worked?
🌱 Which things didn’t work?

🌻 Once you have answers to these questions it will be much easier and less stressful to set some new goals and create a social media strategy to ensure you reach them!
